This is the first course in our Legal English program.
We will examine several fields of law and learn the related legal terms. The course will also introduce you to the Common Law legal system, used in England and the United States.
Elemental Legal English is based on a university semester-long course. Estimated online time for completion is more than 50 hours (this does not include off-line time spent reviewing the material). The course is designed to be completed in 12 weeks (one unit each week), but students can complete the course at their own pace.
Every unit includes sections on Reading Comprehension and Listening, each with exercises. The reading texts are based on excerpts from case law; this is a great way to improve your reading skills, as well as familiarize yourself with precedents which are used in the Common Law legal system. We will look at common collocations – phrases that are frequently used by native English speakers or lawyers.
Appropriate level of general English for this course: Elementary-Advanced. No matter what your English level, you can gain something from this course (as long as you can understand the text). Many lawyers who are not native-English speakers have developed deep English skills, but have not spent time improving their Legal English skills. The course will discuss many terms and concepts that lawyers should understand, but non-lawyers are usually unfamiliar with.
This course will help students prepare for the TOLES Foundation exam. This is the first exam of the TOLES system which tests practical legal vocabulary in authentic situations and basic grammar.
An official Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course.
